New video counters
anti green energy myths

B.C. Citizens for Green Energy release a newly-produced video
to counter the rampant myths and misinformation being spread
against clean, renewable green energy in British Columbia

Vancouver, B.C. — The B.C. Citizens for Green Energy have released two short clips from their newly-produced video entitled “Power Ploy: The Hidden Agenda in the Campaign Against Green Energy.”  The group’s video dispels a number of false claims and myths being spread against green energy in British Columbia, a province naturally endowed with a wealth of opportunities to produce electricity from clean, renewable sources.

“A lot of false information is being spread against clean energy projects in B.C. by an aggressive, well-funded campaign,” said David Field, co-spokesperson for the B.C. Citizens for Green Energy.  “We produced this video to help get the truth out and counter the outrageous claims being made against green energy.”

The seven sections of the group’s “Power Ploy” video, each averaging two minutes in length, will be released two sections at a time over the next few weeks culminating in the release of the entire video in the final week.  Clips from the video will be posted on the B.C. Citizens for Green Energy website as well as on YouTube and Facebook.  The entire thirteen minute video will also be available on DVD in the coming weeks.

Field said the first two clips from the video focus on the outrageous myth that 500 or more B.C. rivers are being sold, stolen or given away for run-of-river electricity production: “The 500 rivers myth is the cornerstone of the anti green energy movement’s misinformation campaign, and they often inflate this figure to 700 rivers or more.  But in truth, only about 35 out of 480 water-license applications have ever led to completed run-of-river projects over an 18-year period.”

Over the next few weeks, clips from the “Power Ploy” video will address other myths about green energy including the myth that B.C. produces enough electricity for its own needs and the myth that independently-produced clean electricity costs more than the electricity produced by BC Hydro.

Other clips from the “Power Ploy” video will focus on British Columbia’s current reliance on dirty power sources like the gas-fired Burrard Thermal generating plant in Port Moody and gas and coal-fired plants in Alberta and Washington State, the need for B.C. to develop new sources of clean energy, and the inherent financial risks for taxpayers in having BC Hydro develop the new green energy sources we need.

“We need to provide a legacy of green renewable energy for future generations,” said Field.  “If we don’t we’ll be subjecting future generations to a dwindling supply of expensive and dirty energy.”

Field invites the public to stay tuned for next week’s release and two more video clips that will address the myth that B.C. produces enough electricity for its own needs and the myth that independently-produced clean electricity costs more than the electricity produced by BC Hydro.
