December 30, 2010 — Media Release — 2010: A banner year for
green energy in B.C.

August 12, 2010 — Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…? — BCCGE Livewire Blog...

Composer George Gershwin obviously wasn’t thinking about renewable energy in B.C. when he set the words, “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy,” to music. Summertime in B.C. has proven to be just as busy as any other time of year for green energy news. Last summer, for example, the BC Utilities Commission won a booby prize for suggesting that B.C.’s growing electricity needs could be met by firing up the gas-fired, cold war era Burrard Thermal generating station near Port Moody... July 14, 2010 — An easy myth to bust — BCCGE Livewire Blog...

Despite our group’s best efforts, there are still people out there claiming that BC Hydro can produce electricity cheaper than independent green energy producers.  The claim is completely dishonest because it’s based on a cost comparison between electricity production at BC Hydro’s aging mega dams (which were built and paid for decades ago) and the cost of electricity production from newly built generating facilities, which is what most green energy projects happen to be... It turns out that trucking snow from Manning Park to Cypress Bowl for the Winter Olympics was just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the low snowpack conditions B.C. is seeing this year.  Still to come this summer are the potential for drought, forest fires and low reservoir levels behind BC Hydro’s hydroelectric mega dams... Columnist Keith Baldrey recently pointed out (in a column about the Site C project) that B.C.’s total provincial debt will hit almost $56 billion by 2012-13.  Definintely not an insubstantial amount.  Our recently released BCCGE Triple Legacy Report also beamed a spotlight on B.C.’s growing provincial debt and juxtaposed it to the considerable public revenue that could be generated for the people of B.C. by harnessing the province’s immense, but largely untapped, renewable green energy resources... We recently received an email from a British Columbia MLA asking why, in a media release about BC Hydro’s Clean Power Call, we had referred to run-of-river power as “firm energy.”   Sadly, the MLA, like many people, was under the mistaken belief that run-of-river “facilities produce most of their power during the spring – early summer.”...
